Retouching Information and Q/A
Below you can see options for retouching depending on the style being shot.
Images are in 3 stages, click to enlarge:
1st Stage: Raw files, straight out of camera no editing.
2nd Stage: Edited raw, where global brightness, colour, contrast, sharpening and highlight shadow recovery is applied.
3rd: Retouched where all the final changes are applied, Skin retouching, colour grading, background object removal and so on.
It is recommended to view these on a computer not a phone as the details will stand out much more.
Most fashion work not only requires skin retouching but clothing alterations and background removal of objects when required (I try not put things in shots I don't want, but sometimes it's unavoidable as you can see below).
Here we have an image that was shot dark to save the highlights, but also required some background mess removed and some selective skin contouring to even out the light on the face.
This is about 45 minutes work.
Here is a shot taken at night using ambient lights, this required considerable colour work in post to return skin tones and required extra colour work in retouching. Being a close up for magazine print, skin was very carefully edited for flaws down to the veins in the eyes. This is about 1.5 hours work.
These shots were for a social media only shoot and was shot and lit so minimal editing was required, and no retouching was required.
An emphasis is placed on natural invisible editing. Shots should not look photoshopped, but at the same time, stand up to being printed large for advertising. Background object removal is common. And at times requires additional content added to a shot (in instances like this an external retoucher is used.
An emphasis on skin and colour is key to enhance mood. Because there is lots of skin, retouching can depending on the model take longer than other genres.
Colour work and skin tones were key in this one, face retouching and skin and colour correction were required. This is about 30min work
This shot is mainly colour correction and toning, but some manual lightening of the shadows over the chest and shoulder and forehead have also been completed to soften the hard light.
This is about half an hour editing.
For this image it's mainly just retouching, the colours were close but the skin required some attention, especially the face, and a few areas have been reshaped. This is about an hours work.
